Theodore J. White
Theodore J. White (Ted), 85, of Indian Wells, died peacefully on Dec. 28, 2008 in his home surrounded by his family. He was born Nov. 9, 1923, to William C. White and Ida Mae White in Ellsworth, Kan. Growing up in Kansas he lived in Ellsworth and Lyons. While in high school he was actively involved in sports. Ted joined the Marines in December of 1942 after dropping out of the University of Kansas to serve his country in its time of need. As part of the 5th Marine Division he was involved in the invasion of Iwo Jima. He was a member of the first patrol to reach the summit of Mount Suribachi. He was wounded on Iwo Jima and sent back to the United States to recover shortly before the end of the war. Ted enrolled at the University of California, Santa Barbara using the G.I. bill and graduating with a degree in Economics. Ted met his future wife, Glenna Titchenal, while enrolled at UC Santa Barbara. He began working for State Farm Insurance while attending college. Ted worked for State Farm Insurance in West Covina, Redding and Pasadena for 27 years as a District Manager. Ted moved to Indian Wells in 1979 to work as a State Farm Agent until his retirement in 1990. While living in Pasadena Ted was involved with Special Olympics and Boy Scouts. After moving to Indian Wells, Ted was actively involved in the Foundation for the Retarded of the Desert serving on the board of directors for several years. He wanted to insure that his son, David, and other handicapped adults were given the opportunity to lead full and productive lives. Ted was an avid tennis player who spent many happy hours at Sunrise Country Club playing tennis well into his seventies. Ted is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Glenna; son Jack White of Bend, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law Christi and Anker Anderson of Sierra Madre, Calif.; daughter Mary Ann Hernandez of Palm Desert; son David White of Indian Wells and his two grandsons, Quico and Manny Hernandez of Palm Desert.
